A STORY BOOK?
In recent days there has been a flood of new ideas about the Bible. Recently the opinion has been stated that the Bible is a book of stories. While at a conference I heard a speaker make this statement. "The Bible is a story book that begins much like most stories. Once upon a time. . . In the beginning. The end of the story ends much like most others. And they lived happily ever after. Even so come quickly Lord Jesus". I shook my head in disbelief. About two years ago I heard a "minister" say that "the Bible is a story book". Now this thought has run through many seminaries, colleges, and worst of all churches. I am confident that the Bible should not be referred to as a "book of stories".
As you can tell I'm concerned. I'm concerned because the embracing of this idea that the Bible is a story book. I respectfully issue a statement to say that the Holy Bible is not a story book. The Bible is the word of God. Yes, it does in fact have several events that God did long ago, but those events should not be viewed as just a story. Each event was and still is authoritative. Our view of the Holy Bible is shifting. We must use extreme caution and the utmost of clarity when proclaiming that the Bible is a book of stories. It's not even just a book. It's inspired by God and given to man to reveal God's master plan of salvation for sinners, discipling of saints, and equipping of the church. What "story" does that? We must regard the scripture as holy and inerrant because of Who inspired them.
Stories, in most cultures, are folk tales and fairy tales. They are not authoritative. The Bible is. My daughter has story books but none of them are inspired by God. Comparing the beginning and end of the Bible to a fairy tale is dangerous ground to tread upon. I realize that there are many passages that would support my statement. However there are two passages that I encourage you to read over and meditate. First of all I encourage everyone to read Psalm 119, yes the whole thing. Next I ask you to read John 17 and to pay particular attention to verse 17.
If we view the Bible as a book of stories, then that's where it will be in our minds. Simply a book of stories.
Respectfully,
Bro. Ray
